Family reunion – Gary and Mary Weaver of rural Rippey hosted Mary’s cousins on Saturday evening for their annual family gathering. The usual building of a human pyramid and the breaking of a piñata was overshadowed this year by the introduction of group line dancing.
Fred and Jacque Grow of Boone came with recorded music and a microphone system to instruct all present in three line dancing routines as well as the chicken dance.
Jeff Scharingson videotaped portions of the line dancing which can be observed on his Facebook page. It certainly documents the variety and abilities of the cousins’ dancing moves. Jodi Scharingson Hall, while wearing an ankle boot, had better moves than some of those of the older generation.
Gary and James Carman cooked steaks to perfection for the group of cousins. After a hearty potluck meal, a campfire was started. In what has become a tradition, a “family song” was led by oldest second generation representative Jon Scharingson. This was a song sung by his grandfather, the late Carville Scharingson. It was surprising how many of the third generation cousins were able to complete the tune under Jon’s able guidance.
Those attending were Jan Scharingson, Jon and Kris of Ankeny (regrets were sent by their son Matthew who was working at the golf course); Kirsten and James Carman of Jefferson accompanied by two daughters Quinn Flack of Kansas City, KS, and Hailey Carman; Jeff Scharingson and his wife Cyndie accompanied by Nicholas and Jaden; and Mike Scharingson’s family including DeAnn and their children Jodi and Ryan Hall along with their children Peyton and Reagan of West Des Moines, and Erin and Clint Russell of Papilion, NE, with their children Kennedy and Sierra.
Gary and Mary’s children David, Emily and daughter Ada of Rippey, along with Matt and Theresa Weaver Basye, Nathan and Lauryn were also present. The Sioux City Basyes could not come until Nathan had finished playing in a Sioux City golf tournament. His score was 43, for the 8-11 year olds, and he was able to show all of his family his third place trophy.
A good time was had by all.
